I live on the edge of a friendly village in the north of the Deux-Sevres, one of the four departments that make up the Poitou-Charente region. We picked this area for three practical reasons – it’s south of the Loire which means generally mild winters and warm-hot summers, there are good road-links to airports (Nantes, Poitiers, La Rochelle, Tours), the TGV (Angers, Poitiers) and ferries (St Malo, Roscoff etc) and, importantly, the price of property and land represents excellent value for money. Having had a house here since 2003, I can now add many other great reasons for choosing this area! The countryside is so diverse, offering the open plains south-eastwards towards Poitiers, the pretty ‘bocage’ landscape of small fields and hedgerows, hidden rivers and valleys centred around Parthenay and Bressuire, and the ‘Green Venice’ waterways of the Marais Poitevin as you move west to the fabulous beaches and coastal towns. There is so much to explore, all within easy reach – the many local chateaux and wines, as well as those of the nearby Loire, tourist hotspots such as the not-to-be-missed Puy du Fou (I must have been a dozen times and still love it), Futuroscope, and the Gerald Durrell-inspired BioParc at Doué-La-Fontaine. History, sport, art, theatre, music – there’s plenty going on all year round, and during the long summers, there are festivals or ‘fêtes’ in almost every village, each with their own theme. Our best local ones include Steak, Mussels and Chips, Snails and the brilliant Producers’ Market – all great social and gastronomic occasions! This is an area full of friendly people, lovely scenery, historic towns and much, much more, all just waiting for you to discover!
I moved permanently to the Deux Sèvres in 2010, after many years of living all over the UK and elsewhere, and coming to France has definitely been the best move of them all. I absolutely love being here! Nattering with the neighbours about the veggie plot and hen- husbandry, enjoying the essential ‘apero’, getting involved in local fêtes and the many different social and sporting clubs, grappling with the rules of the card game ‘belote’, or trying to work out how many kisses to give when meeting friends (and strangers!), there are many simple pleasures to be found very close to home. Family and community values are still strong, the weather is kinder and warmer, the people are welcoming and of course, there’s the fabulous food and the wine… My husband and I bought our house back in 2003, and we feel very ‘at home’ in our village. I haven’t forgotten, however, that buying and selling property can be as daunting as it is exciting, particularly when a move overseas is involved; my aim is to help you achieve your goals as smoothly and efficiently as possible, allowing you to move in, or to move on, to your own French adventure.
