Carcassonne is, indeed, an exceptional city in every way and visitors would be excused for thinking that they are coming into a fairytale world. The fortified city stands majestically on a hill overlooking the lush countryside of the Languedoc and the distant Pyrenees Mountains. “The Cite de Carcassonne" is located in the lovely Languedoc region of France, near the border with Spain and boasts of two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Cité with its historical and architectural splendor as well as its cultural activities and the Canal du Midi, a major attraction with its variety of boating activities. Every summer from the end of June to the end of August, Carcassonne welcomes national and international artists to its open air theatre. There, under the summer skies, you can enjoy the music of the Berlin Philharmonic, the graceful dancers of the Royal Ballet, the singing of José Carreras, Sting, Diana Ross, the Beach Boys and Joe Cocker to name a few. A short ride from the Carcassonne airport, you enter another special place, Limoux, and the Razès. With fields of sunflowers and grapevines, this area is famous for its Blanquette, a sparkling wine that gave the monk Dom Perignon the method of fabricating his now famous Champagne. Here you can ride your bike, go rafting in one of the many rivers, hike or visit the famous Cathar castles as after all, you are in the heart of Cathar Country. From the Pyrenees and its ski slopes to the Mediterranean with its sandy beaches, good food and don't forget its over 300 days of sunshine Languedoc-Roussillon still offers great deals for the money. Come and discover why the Aude is the up-and-coming jewel of the region and high on home hunters’ lists. It boasts a fantastically diverse country side, and weather very similar to that of the Cote d'Azur and Provence. One big difference; home prices here are much more affordable for the average buyer. So, as its airport grows more and more popular with flights to and from many European airports plus the close proximity of Narbonne's high speed rail connection, there's great potential for properties in this most popular of French regions.
When I met my husband in the 1980’s he was a chef and restaurateur in New York and I, an Estate agent. Our lives were busy and stress filled with our businesses and our children. I could not have imagined then that his dream of returning to France would become a reality but here we are and loving it! Fourteen years ago, we packed our bags, and with the four youngest of our seven children and our dog, Sunshine we flew to the south of France. Carcassonne to be exact. I have not regretted our decision. In fact, I took to it like a duck does to water. We live a more relaxed lifestyle, enjoy an aperitif with neighbours from time to time, go to the open air market for fresh fruits and vegetables in season and we are literally in the heart of wine country, surrounded by the Corbières, the Razès and the Minervois. The weather is mild, the people are friendly and adjusting was painless. Right now, I am doing what I love most – helping people find their dream home in a beautiful country and a fantastic region.
