About my area

I live in the Vendée on the West coast of France near to the popular tourist town of St Gilles Croix-de-Vie with its accessible ‘Grand Plage’ of fine golden sands and its quaint shops, bars & restaurants. Nearby are the coastal resorts of St Hilaire-de-Riez, St Jean-de-Monts, Bretignolles-sur-mer , Talmont Saint Hilaire and les Sables d’Olonne, famous for the Vendée Globe round-the-world yacht race. The miles of cycle tracks and footpaths provide a great way to explore this region’s beaches, vineyards, castles, historic towns, churches, picturesque villages and marinas and the islands of Noirmoutier & Yeu. The Vendée is a nature lover’s paradise with sand dunes, salt marshes, observatories, nature reserves, forests, parks, lakes and open spaces. Outdoor activities include water-based sports as well as golf, karting, the velo rail, water parks and zip line courses. The Puy du Fou historic theme park is one of the most visited attractions in France. The Vendée has a mild climate with an annual average of 2500 hours of sunshine. There is easy access from the channel ports, a direct rail link from Nantes to St Gilles Croix-de-Vie or an hour’s drive from Nantes airport.

About me

I moved with my husband and family from the South of England to the Vendée in 2002. We had become familiar with the area whilst renovating our holiday home. We soon realised that the Vendée, although a popular tourist destination, is a wonderful place to live year-round. We enjoy walking or cycling off-road in the salt marshes, along disused railway tracks or to the beach and harbour in St Gilles Croix-de-Vie, taking in the scenery and being entertained by activities on sea or sand.
