I chose to settle in the lush environs of Périgord Vert, located in the northern Dordogne, south-west France. Périgord Vert is appropriately named for the greenness of its expansive forests, hills and meadows. These, along with its numerous lakes, rivers and warm climate, combine to make it the perfect home for lovers of the outdoors. Walking, cycling, horse-riding, canoeing, swimming, and dining al fresco are all popular amongst tourists and locals alike. This region is steeped in history and full of life. From the medieval chateaux and prehistoric caves, to the lakeside beaches and vibrant markets, its beautiful towns and villages are home to an abundance of activities and sensory delights. Two of my favourite villages are Aubeterre-sur-Drone, which boasts an impressive underground church, and Brantôme – with its majestic abbey, home to the oldest bell-tower in France and links to the renowned pilgrim route, the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. Périgord Vert is well-served for travel with an excellent road network, close proximity to the airports of Bergerac, Limoges and Bordeaux, and a TGV connection to Paris and the Eurostar in Angoulême. The region is unspoilt and uncrowded, making it a peaceful place to live with plenty of choice for shopping and travel. If you’re partial to the sand between your toes, the beaches of the west coast are easily accessible for a day trip.
I live in the stunningly beautiful north Dordogne with my husband. We are originally from Dublin, Ireland, and lived in the UK for a number of years, but this region of France stole our hearts many years ago. The wonderful climate encourages lots of outdoor activities and, for foodies like us, the range of fresh produce in all seasons is a delight. There’s plenty of green space for everyone to relax and enjoy life and the long summer days are a definite bonus. We no longer arrive home exhausted after a day’s work and stressful commute. Now we have time to enjoy that cup of coffee, or glass of wine on the terrace and breathe in the fresh, evening air. Since relocating to the Dordogne, our local community has been most welcoming and helpful – we could never have imagined how friendly everyone would be. We thoroughly enjoy embracing the language and culture and find it incredibly rejuvenating. When I walk my dog into my local village to buy fresh, warm croissants and local, artisan bread in the mornings, I can hardly recall the hustle and bustle of my previous life. Now that my dream has come true, I would love to help you realize yours!
