I live in the countryside just outside the town of Tonnay Charente. We were able to afford a house with land for our horses that we could never afford the likes of in the UK. I live in the countryside just outside the town of Tonnay Charente. We were able to afford a house with land for our horses that we could never afford the likes of in the UK. We took early retirement out here 2 years ago having fallen in love with the area on numerous holidays. We love the long warm summers when family and friends visit us and it feels like one very long holiday with restful pool side days and busier days visiting the seaside, historic towns and chateau’s around us. Whilst we are in the countryside all amenities needed are readily accessible within 5-15 minutes drive. If this area sounds like it could suit you for a change of lifestyle, retirement, holiday home, or holiday home business then please get in touch. If I or one of my Leggett colleagues haven’t currently got a house that suits your needs I will personally seek out on your behalf from your key requirements. I will help you through the buying process in France, and will be happy to pass on advice about all the general day to day living subjects (tax, health, finances, etc).

I cover the part of Charente Maritime which includes the lovely historic naval town of Rochefort, the old riverside town of Tonnay Charente, the unspoilt seaside town of Fouras, and the surrounding towns, villages, and countryside in this quarter of the Department. From this lovely area it is easy to explore further into Charente Maritime: 30 minutes north is the popular large coastal resort town of La Rochelle with marinas, major shopping and restaurant choices, resort amenities and attractions, and the airport with regular cheap services to various UK airports via the budget airlines. TGV services are also available from here. La Rochelle is also the gateway to the beautiful Isle de Re, very popular with holiday makers from France and the rest of Europe. 45 minutes south lies the popular seaside resort of Royan, whilst east within 30-60 minutes you have the historic towns of Cognac, Saintes, and St Jean D’Angely surrounded by vineyards primarily providing grapes for the famous Cognac and Pineau produced here. Heading further south out of the Charente within 1.5 hours is the famous city of Bordeaux and its major airport.
