THE LOCAL AREA:
A good choice of shops, restaurants and bars can be found in the local towns of Arette, Lanne-en Barétous and Aramits – along with weekly farmers’ markets. For a much bigger choice of shops and amenities, the riverside town of Oloron-Ste-Marie is about 20 minutes away and the city of Pau is under an hour away.
The area has many excellent schools, including a Collège in Arette and a university in Pau. The children are transported to school by bus should they need to travel away from the village, with a great choice of secondary schools at Oloron-Ste-Marie or Mauléon-Licharre. There is a regular bus to Oloron-Ste-Marie from Arette, which also goes up to the ski resort of La-Pierre-St-Martin during the skiing season.
Popular with tourists all the year round for hiking, mountain-biking, white-water rafting and fishing, the region also offers a range of winter sports, including downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing. For those preferring beach-based activities, especially surfing, the famous resorts of Biarritz, Saint Jean de Luz and Hossegor on the Atlantic coast are an easy drive away...
Film buffs might be interested to know that the town of Oloron-Ste-Marie and several of the picturesque villages of the Vallée d’Aspe have recently been chosen as film locations, most notably for two French films starring the Oscar winner, Jean Dujardin, and an English film, "Waiting for Anya" based on the Michael Morpurgo book set in France in the Second World War.
