This amazing mill dates back to the 19th century and comprises a three-bedroom gîte, a two-bedroom main house (which can be combined to make a five-bedroom family house), numerous outbuildings and a garage. The riverside grounds incorporate woodlands and meadowlands of two hectares, along with waterfalls, two deep natural swimming pools in the river and a Roman bridge!

Exquisitely furnished and decorated, the original mill house is now a three-bedroom gîte which overlooks the river. Adjoining the gîte is the two-bedroom main house. Constructed in 2009, the main house has been built in exactly the same delightful style as the original buildings. The gîte is accessible from the main house via an internal staircase. This gives you the flexibility of either maintaining two separate, self-contained houses or combining both to create a spacious five-bedroom house with two kitchens, two bathrooms and two shower rooms.

Most of the rooms in the main house and the gîte overlook the river, with terraces and balconies on three sides of the building. If you are planning to set up a Bed and Breakfast business, the bedrooms in the main house and the gîte are ideal. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a wonderful family home or holiday home, you can move in straight away and start enjoying the fairytale surroundings…

The mill is located on the outskirts of a pretty village which is on the GR653 walking route. It is also on the St-Jacques-de-Compostelle pilgrim route (Voie d’Arles), which runs south from the Medieval market town of Oloron-Ste-Marie into Spain through the picturesque Vallée d’Aspe. Atlantic beach resorts are about 90 minutes away to the west and the Pyrénées ski resorts are about an hour away to the south. The city of Pau and the verdant Basque Country are all under 30 minutes away; Toulouse and Bordeaux are two hours away.

The main house:
- terraces
- a sitting room with a wood-burning stove and access to the terraces
- an open-plan living room with a dining area and kitchenette
- a master bedroom suite with an en suite bathroom
- a bedroom with an en suite shower room
- stairs down to the gîte

The gîte:
- a sitting room with lovely views of the river
- an open-plan kitchen with a dining area
- a master bedroom suite with a balcony
- an adjacent bathroom
- a second bedroom
- a small bedroom with bunkbeds
- a shower room

The mill has two hectares of riverside grounds, which include a Roman bridge, waterfalls, places to fish and two deep natural swimming pools in the river. Some of the land is woodland, some is meadowland – and there is ample flat land for installing a swimming pool, if desired.

The three-bedroom gîte in the old mill already has a fantastic online reputation, as well as being awarded four stars by the tourist office in 2014! The beautiful accommodation and the stunning setting guarantee all-year-round business for both short-term and long-term guests. You could perhaps offer fairytale honeymoon accommodation… or run wine-tasting courses or cookery courses in the main house … Whatever your plans, this property is a dream come true!

Heat pump heating system, supplying radiators in the main house and in the gîte
3 wood-burning stoves

The medieval market town of Oloron Sainte Marie is just a short drive away where you will find shops, restaurants and pretty riverside walks along the Gave d’Oloron. The town has recently been officially classified by the French government as a “ville active et sportive” and has many sporting facilities and cycle routes. There is also a free shuttle bus service for getting about.

Despite its relatively small size (population 10,000), Oloron offers an unusual number of cultural events and activities, both amateur and professional and its excellent and well-stocked modern médiathèque, set glamorously where the Gave d’Ossau and the Gave d’Aspe join to become the Gave d’Oloron, won its architect the prestigious Equerre d'Argent prize.

Popular with tourists all the year round for hiking, mountain-biking, white-water rafting and fishing, the region also offers a range of winter sports (downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing) with easy access to numerous ski stations. For those preferring beach-based activities (especially surfing) the famous resorts of the Atlantic coast are just an hour and a half away (Biarritz, Saint Jean de Luz, Hendaye, Hossegor...) There is also an Aeroclub for small planes and gliders in nearby Herrère.

Film buffs might be interested to know that the town of Oloron Sainte Marie and several of the picturesque villages of the Vallée d’Aspe have recently been chosen as film locations, most notably for two French films ("Le Daim" and "I Feel Good") starring the Oscar winner, Jean Dujardin, and an English film, "Waiting for Anya" based on the Michael Morpurgo book set in France in the Second World War. Not only is the stunning, unspoilt countryside of the Béarn perfect for filmmakers, but enthusiastic locals are often encouraged to volunteer as extras to appear alongside the international film stars - next time, that could be you!

Oloron Saint Marie (13 minutes) - Leclerc and Intermarché hypermarkets, But, Darty, hospital, theatre, cinema, swimming pool, bars, restaurants...
