With much of the conversion and renovation work completed, this historic former gatehouse would make a unique family house or an excellent investment for a tourism-related holiday business. With one gîte ready to go and space to create another gîte or a number of B & B rooms, the year-round earning potential is considerable. The large, mature garden (2,745m²) is a delight - and has plenty of space for installing a swimming pool. Read more ...

Once the gatehouse for the neighbouring château, this fascinating property has a style all of its own. Hidden away on the outskirts of a rural farming village, the 18th-century building has many delightful architectural features which are being carefully restored by the present owners. The house forms an “L” with the former stables, which have been converted into a pretty gîte, which is ready to let. Not only is the accommodation light and airy with large open-plan rooms, but also the grounds are enclosed and private, ensuring peace and tranquillity all year round.

The grounds have been beautifully planted with mature trees and shrubs - and the flat land to the back of the property would be ideal for installing a swimming pool. The shady courtyard at the front of the gatehouse would make a super place to serve breakfast to guests and the sunny garden at the back would be ideal for serving tables d’hôtes meals could be offered in the evenings. There is also a huge wooden, open-sided pigeonnier which could be converted into a fabulous summer-house.

Close to the historic market town of Oloron-Ste-Marie, the gatehouse is in an excellent location in the Béarn for exploring the Pyrénées and Spain – and if you love skiing and the beach, skiing resorts and coastal resorts are within easy reach, with La-Pierre-St-Martin to the south and Biarritz to the West.

The house is on the edge of the little village of Féas, which has a popular auberge, Chez Zélie (5/5 on TripAdvisor), who also provide a dépôt de pain for fresh baguettes and croissants and a Point Poste. Aramits (10 minutes) has an Intermarché supermarket and most essential services. For more serious shopping, Oloron is just 15 minutes away.

Féas is in the Béarn, one of the ancient French provinces in the south-western Pyrénées. It is close to the Spanish border, Pau, Lourdes, the picturesque Basque Country and the famous beach resorts of the Atlantic coast, such as Biarritz and St-Jean de Luz. Toulouse, Bordeaux, San Sebastián and Bilbao are all within easy reach. The river Le Vert, which runs through the village, forms part of the pilgrim route Le Chemin de St-Jacques de Compostelle.

Popular with tourists all the year round for hiking, mountain-biking, white-water rafting and fishing, the region also offers a range of winter sports (downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing) with easy access to numerous ski stations. For those preferring beach-based activities (especially surfing) the famous resorts of the Atlantic coast are just an hour and half away (Biarritz, Saint Jean de Luz, Hossegor...)

Film buffs might be interested to know that the town of Oloron Sainte Marie and several of the picturesque villages of the Vallée d’Aspe have recently been chosen as film locations, most notably for two French films starring the Oscar winner, Jean Dujardin, and an English film, "Waiting for Anya" based on the Michael Morpurgo book set in France in the Second World War. Not only is the stunning, unspoilt countryside of the Béarn perfect for filmmakers, but enthusiastic locals are often encouraged to volunteer as extras to appear alongside the international film stars - next time, that could be you!
