This delightful property is absolutely perfect for anyone looking for a spacious family home or holiday home close to ski resorts and beach resorts! Located in an historic village close to the bastide town of Navarrenx, this lovely house has four bedrooms and wonderful terrace, which overlooks the property’s mature gardens and grounds. Dating back to the 16th-century, this super property was originally designed as a maison-de-maître until it was partly destroyed by fire during the 20th century. The ruins subsequently became part of a new construction – a “bergerie” for the neighbouring château. The façade of the house looks deceptively modern, with certain original architectural features preserved in the side and back walls of the property.

The front door opens into a sunny entrance hall with a high ceiling. The adjacent open-plan sitting room/dining room has a beautiful open fireplace with a woodburning stove and a cosy sunken sitting area with a French window opening onto the terrace. Sliding glazed doors open into a further dining area with a glazed roof and a summer kitchen, which opens onto a superb terrace of 70m² which overlooks the landscaped gardens and grounds and has a magnificent view over the countryside and the local river, the Gave d’Oloron.

The main kitchen, off the hall, also has a separate dining area. Behind the staircase, there is a small study which has a sleeping platform and so could be used as a fifth bedroom, along with a bathroom and a WC.

The magnificent wooden staircase leads to the first of four bedrooms and then up to a huge galleried landing, which is currently being used as a sitting area. The master bedroom has a south-facing balcony-terrace, with lovely views of the neighbouring château, and a separate cosy sitting room at a lower level. Also on this floor are two further bedrooms, a family bathroom, a dressing room/lingerie and a WC.

The beautiful Béarnaise town of Navarrenx is close to several lakes and rivers for exciting watersports, numerous ski resorts in the French and Spanish Pyrénées, as well as surfing and family beaches on the Atlantic coast. The verdant Basque Country is just minutes away – and the Medieval market town of Oloron-Ste-Marie is just 20 minutes away, where you will find numerous shops and a twice-weekly farmers’ market. If you have a family, the excellent schools in the area will leave you spoilt for choice…

Ground floor:
- a sunny entrance hall (13m²)
- a large open-plan sitting room/dining room with an open fireplace and a cosy snug (55m²)
- a study/office/fifth bedroom with sleeping platform (11m²)
- a fitted kitchen with an adjacent dining area (18m²)
- a dining conservatory and summer kitchen (25m²)
- a bathroom (6m²)
- a WC (2m²)

- bedroom (14m²)

First floor:
- a spacious mezzanine sitting area (37m²)
- a master bedroom (25m²) with access to a private balcony/small terrace and a separate sitting room (17m²)
- two further bedrooms (each 12m²)
- a family bathroom (16m²)
- a dressing room/linen store (6m²)
- WC (2m²)

The property is set in enclosed gardens and grounds of 2,355m² planted with mature trees and shrubs. At the back of the house, there is a huge terrace for outdoor dining and ample room to install a swimming pool. From the terrace, there are lovely views over the countryside and the Gave d’Oloron.

This property is currently a beautiful, spacious home, which can be moved into straight away. For families with children, the schools in the area are absolutely excellent, with many of them offering options in the lycée (15-18) to specialize in theatre, various sports and horse-riding.

The Béarn is close to the Spanish border, Pau, Lourdes, the picturesque Basque Country and the Atlantic coast. Toulouse, Bordeaux, San Sebastián and Bilbao are all within easy reach.

Popular with tourists all year round for hiking, mountain-biking, white-water rafting and fishing, the region also has numerous ski resorts offering a range of winter sports, including downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding and snow-shoeing. For those who prefer beach-based activities, the Atlantic coast is just 90 minutes away where you can swim and surf at Biarritz, St-Jean-de-Luz, Hendaye, Hossegor... Nearby in Herrère, there is a flying club for small planes and gliders.

If your interests are gastronomic, visit the daily markets throughout the Béarn and Basque Country to sample local delicacies, such as tasty Bayonne ham or fabulous brebis, which is a cheese made using milk from sheep. The famous “Ossau-Iraty” brebis can be bought direct from farms in the nearby Vallée d’Ossau, or you’ll find it at any of the farmers’ markets in the local towns and villages.

Film buffs might be interested to know that the nearby town of Oloron-Ste-Marie and several of the picturesque villages of the Vallée d’Aspe have recently been chosen as film locations, most notably for two French films starring the Oscar winner, Jean Dujardin, and an English film, "Waiting for Anya" based on the Michael Morpurgo book set in France in the Second World War. Not only is the stunning, unspoilt countryside of the Béarn perfect for filmmakers, but enthusiastic locals are often encouraged to volunteer as extras to appear alongside the international film stars - next time, that could be you!
