FINIS TERRAE : The Land Ends, The Adventure Begins! Basked by two seas and an ocean, with an incredibly rich bio-diversity, including moors, mystical forests, coastal rivers and a thousand kilometres of coast line - Finistere awaits. Finistere is also Brittany in its whole authenticity, a concentrate of “Breton attitude”. It is also a land of “Patrimoine” (Heritage) and cultures. The residents or visitors are stunned by the etymology of the areas, the mosaic of the landscape or the vitality of its actors. The medieval cities of Quimper or Morlaix, the quaint fishing port of Roscoff (so much more than a ferry port!), the bustling city of Brest with its new airport and tram will captivate by their contrast and diversity. Fringed by crystal waters and a wild and rugged coastline, stunning beaches and studded with the most amazing granite boulders the visitor cannot miss the feeling of infinity and power emanating from this land of tales and legends which is also blessed by an abundance of fayre, from the most delicious fish and seafood to the product of the land. A few kilometres inland you have the ancient forests where legend has it that King Arthur fought Morgana and where his pal Merlin has established residence. Now, how’s that for a reference! Finally Finistere is the promise of true encounters and an opening on a different world. Welcome to Finistere! Degemer mat e Penn ar Bed!
Bonjour! By the ripe old age of 20 I decided to leave the small fishing town in West Finistere where I was born and set sail north towards that strange and mysterious island called Angleterre. The purpose of my journey was to find out for myself whether the tales of the indigenous population eating stuffed sheep stomachs, mixing mint, vinegar and lamb, drinking black beer and cups of brownish hot water with milk were true! I also heard that in those days, inn keepers shattered your ear drums by yelling as loudly as possible whilst ringing a bell in order to eject you from their premises when the fun was just beginning. You will never believe it but all was true, what a culture shock! My first reaction was to swim back to Roscoff. However, another reason for my “Aventure Anglaise” was to try and master the dialect widely spoken by most of the local tribes, which my father informed me would open many doors throughout the rest of the world. Fresh from a 3 year catering training course in Paris, I was convinced that after 6 months I would be fluent. Well I was only 20.....! Decisions had to be taken, either persevere or sail back home wondering what “All right Froggy” meant for the rest of my life. My original plan of 6 months mutated into almost 30 years of rich, wonderful and sometimes tough experiences in a country I came to love, understand and respect. Having witnessed so many changes to my country of adoption, my partner, Heather, and I sold our wine distribution business in the UK and moved to Spain for 5 years running our own restaurant. The worsening economic situation forced the closure of our Spanish venture and we left Spain in 2009 for Brittany where we have successfully been selling property in Finistere ever since. After reading these few lines about my area and myself, you will have understood that I am incredibly proud of my Celtic roots and madly passionate about our heritage. It would be a pleasure to share those feelings and emotions with you, help you to find what you are looking for and discuss your requirements over a glass of wine (or two...). A bientôt
