My family and I have always loved the Gard region of France, with its Roman ruins, rivers and hills, beautiful stone villages and animated weekly gastro markets - and so in 2012 we moved here permanently - and now couldn't envisage living anywhere else! The people are so friendly, and there is always so much to see and do.

It is scattered with Roman edifices such as the Pont du Gard, which you can canoe underneath, and Roman amphitheatres, and in winter it is a magical market place of truffles and dappled sunshine. The Cevennes forms part of the Unesco national heritage parks – hills, rivers, snow at the top in winter, and acres of wooded forest with medieval villages, with chestnuts and silk as the main produce. And so to the Ardèche- again very different, with hundreds of rivers and streams for bathing, fishing, canoeing or canyoning, pretty stone villages, woods and forests, and quiet country roads to cycle. A joy in all seasons.
