Brittany's historic capital, 2,000 year-old Rennes, which lies at the confluence of the Ille et Vilaine rivers, is one of the departments four "Art Towns", the others being Fougères, Saint-Malo and Vitré. Rennes has a population of around 220,000 inhabitants and attracts a large mobile population, mainly because of the university and many business that have established in the area.
Whilst the department is the most densely-populated in Brittany, by contrast it has the youngest population, averaging under 37 years of age. Other towns and places of interest include Redon, at the confluence of Brittany's two largest rivers, the Oust and the Vilaine, and Dinard, one of Europe's finest seaside resorts. The coastal towns of Saint Malo and Dinard and the areas inland of the coast are very popular with homebuyers because of the attractive coastline, generally mild climate, great infrastructure and ease of access back to the UK and Northern Europe. From Rennes airport one can fly direct to Exeter, Southampton, Manchester, Edinburgh, Belfast and Dublin, and Dinard airport, although smaller, offers flights to Guernsey and London. St Malo port offers cross channel ferry access to Poole, Portsmouth, Weymouth, Jersey and Guernsey.
It is a department rich in historic and religious monuments, remarkable medieval cities and natural history with numerous museums and theatres. Its' proximity to the coast attracts a large number of tourists to the area, which is good news for those looking to set up a tourist-related business such as chambre d'hôtes or gîtes.
