Nestled in the heart of the Rhôdanian Gard , between Languedoc and Provence, Roquemaure has always benefitted from its highly priviledged geographical situation. The history of Roquemaure is amazing : In 218 B.C. the young commander of the armies of Carthage , Hannibal, chose to cross the Rhône river at Roquemaure with his great army and his famous elephants. The battle against the Welsh army on the other bank of the Rhône remains a great military victory in those days second to none. At the start of the 12th century the Castle of Roquemaure was amongst the most important in the Languedoc. The Pope Clément V died in Roquemaure in April 1314. Today there are few vestiges left of the walled city, like the circular Tower of the Queen and the square Tower of The Princes de Soubise. The whole region is mainly vineyards with such brand names as Tavel, Lirac and Châteauneuf du Pape. Avignon is 15 mins. drive and has all amenities.
