Loire-Atlantique is part of the current region of Pays-de-la-Loire and is surrounded by the departments of Morbihan, Ile-et-Vilaine, Maine-et-Loire, and Vendée with the Atlantic on the west. It is a particularly scenic region, with some 30 miles of the Jade Coast.
The area was originally part of Brittany, and contains what many people still consider to be Brittany's capital, Nantes. This department was separated from Brittany in 1941 by the German occupation.
Although Saint Nazaire is a major commercial port, Nantes, the regional capital, offers visitors a cultural heritage dominated by Gothic art and the Renaissance. Nantes is a large, bustling town, home to the most important gallery of paintings in France after the Louvre. Its impressive château des ducs de Bretagne is well worth a visit, as is the passage Pommeraye, a sumptuous and fantastical 19th-century shopping arcade. It claims to be the most rapidly developing city in France, with France's largest refinery and the country's fourth largest port, a major university and modern industries such as electronics and aviation. Nantes Airport offers flights back to London Stansted, East Midlands and Dublin.
Other places of interest are Pornic, a fishing village that has become popular as a seaside resort, once frequented by Auguste Renoir and Gustave Flaubert, and La Baule-Escoublac, a resort created in the 19th century and now just 3 hours from Paris by TGV. Dotted along the beach and inland in the forests, you will find stunning apartments and villas just seconds from the sea or overlooking stunning marinas.
