Situated in a quiet hamlet in the Minervois, surrounded by vineyards and garrigue, this traditional three/four-bedroomed house still has its original features. Read more ...
Pretty tiled floors, large fireplace, marble sink with its tiled surround, marble window sills in the kitchen, and a 'potager' - the forerunner of a kitchen stove, where glowing embers serve as a hotplate.
It has three floors - and, surprisingly, two kitchens, because it housed grape-pickers during the harvest. The main kitchen takes the whole of the ground floor. The bedrooms and second kitchen are on the first and second floors. On the top floor there are rustic beams; there is a shower room on the first floor.
Both staircases are tiled. There are built-in cupboards or niches on each floor; even the marble sink is inside a cupboard with panelled doors!
The house has no outside space, but it would be possible to create a roof terrace, subject to permission.
The hamlet is in the commune of Aigues-Vives, in the Minervois next to St. Jean de Minervois and 'the best Muscat in the world'! It is between the coastal plain of Narbonne and the Montagne Noire, scattered with almond, fig, cherry, apricot and olive trees, and very unspoilt, full of wild flowers and birds. The scenery is magnificent.
One of the nearest markets is at St. Chinian; the route there is a pleasure in itself. St. Chinian is a pleasant town with shops, banks, supermarkets, restaurants, etc. Olonzac, is also well-supplied with amenities and has its market on Tuesdays. In Aigues Vives there is a small supermarket, a Post Office, a nursery school, a bakery, a hair salon and two restaurants. In the area are many super restaurants, of course, and you will never be short of good wine!
Narbonne is 35km, Béziers is at 40km and Carcassonne is 55km away. Both Béziers and Carcassonne also have airports.
The area is wonderful for tourists, with Minerve, one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, les Châteaux Cathars, Le Canal du Midi, the sea at Narbonne Plage and Gruissan, about 50km away, and lots of 'fêtes' and concerts.
