The current French owners have operated this classic old charentaise as a 'chambres d'hotes' for the past couple of years. It is ideally situated alongside the Archiac to Jonzac road just south of the lovely historic town of Archiac itself and only some 15 mins from Cognac. Although fairly busy at times, the road itself is really only used at peak 'travel to work' rush-hour periods during week-days, and at the weekends it is very quiet. The house benefits from double-glazing and is well insulated and in excellent decorative order.

Location in France

The Charente-Maritime is Poitou-Charentes' coastal department. Here, 420 km of sandy beaches are lapped by the Atlantic under some of the sunniest skies in the whole of France. There are also three islands, each with its own unique atmosphere. Inland, you won't struggle to find some incredible cultural and historical gems. Romanesque architecture features heavily throughout the department.
La Rochelle is the capital of the department, and is home to around 120,000 people, a great number of whom are students from the university. This extremely smart town has an active cultural scene throughout the year, regardless of the weather. You can stroll amongst the boats in the pedestrianised marina along the cobbled streets, and admire the two impressive 14th century towers.
Away from the mainland, the Ile de Ré is a large island completely encircled by fine and mostly sandy beaches. In August the population increases dramatically, mainly due to holidaying families.
There are a number of airports offering flights to and from the UK in the vicinity. Tours, La Rochelle, Nantes and Poitiers all have direct UK flights. It is also possible to fly to Angoulême by changing in Paris. If you'd rather travel by land then the TGV train service will take you to Poiters, La Rochelle or Angoulême. La Rochelle and Ile de Re are extremely popular holiday destinations and so have an active rental market. This means that the prices are going to be higher, yet still represent real value for money. There are a large number of properties needing renovation on the market, but close to the coast these are not likely to be cheap, although further inland towards Saintes there are still "bonnes affaires" to be found.
