A charming village steeped in history:
History of the village
The name L'Etang-la-Ville comes from a large lake that once stood in the centre of the village. This pond was drained in the 17th century and replaced by a meadow, the "pré de l'Etang". The name "l'Etang" was changed to "l'Etang sous Marly" and then to "L'Etang-la-Ville".
Translated from the Latin "Stagnum Villa", which means "the fief of the pond", this name and the name of its inhabitants, the "stagnovillois", come from the names "stano", "stanum", "stagno", "stagno-villa" and "stagnum-villa" found in Latin charters.
After the French Revolution, the village became known as "l'Etang les Sources", but only for a few years. Even before the village came into being, the Celts inhabited the area, as attested by the discovery in 1878 of a dolmen at a place called "Cher Arpent", containing the bones of at least 50 people. During the Roman occupation, wheat, fruit trees and, above all, vines were cultivated. The village was not built until the 10th century.
