The history of Madiran wine:
The establishment of vineyards in the Pyrenean foothills dates from the Gallo-Roman period as evidenced by many mosaics. However, the vineyard of Madiran does not know a real existence until the eleventh century when monks of the abbey of Madiran introduce seedlings from their "mother house" of Marcilhac in the Lot.
An immediate boom followed this introduction and from 1309, the Fors and Customs of Castelnau devoted three articles to the wine trade.
Because of their ecclesiastical origin, these wines were used for centuries in the celebration of Mass in the dioceses of Tarbes, Oloron, Bayonne, Aire and Auch, hence the name of priest's wine that they kept until the beginning of the last century.
Boosted by the supply of wines to the Pyrenees who appreciated the ‘hortalesse’, a trade by Bayonne to the countries of Northern Europe and the need to strengthen certain Bordeaux wines, the surface of the vineyard grew steadily in the eighteenth century and early nineteenth century to reach 24% of the terroir.
From 1850, the vineyard began a marked decline under the effect of three consecutive health crises.
In 1910, at the end of the successive crises that destroyed more than half of the vineyard, a first delimitation of the Madiran terroir was obtained and the vine was replanted on the best terroirs.
In 1948, the wines of Madiran (exclusively red) and the Pacherencs of Vic Bilh (dry and sweet whites) rose to the rank of AOC. The production area concerns 37 municipalities in the departments of hautes and basses Pyrénées, which later became Atlantiques and Gers.
The 1970s were marked by a strong planting of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon because the mastery of the vinification of Tannats was not complete.
Today, we are witnessing the return of productions with a higher proportion of Tannat that give exceptional wines thanks to the progress of winemaking and an already ancient practice of late harvesting.
The production is organized around fifty independent winegrowers and 250 winegrowers who bring their harvest in cooperative.
The property:
Exploited for several generations, this property is still in operation, it consists of more than 26 hectares of vines of different grape varieties, a family house of 200 m², furnished offices, a reception and tasting room, farm buildings with a surface area of more than 900 m² including all the necessary equipment: winemaking cellars, three presses, stainless steel vat room, temperature control, refrigeration unit, nitrogen equipment, filtration and bottling, aging cellars with oak barrels.
Wine stock is also included.
The huge asset of this property is its two lakes connected to an irrigation system.
The area planted with vines, representing only 25%, could be extended or it would also be possible to diversify the agricultural activity or even to add an equestrian part.
This winery is sold turnkey and it will offer many opportunities to its new buyers.
