Nicknamed "the black pearl of the Mediterranean" in reference to its monuments built of basalt stone, the town of Agde was once an ancient Greek port. A former marsh, it was separated from the sea by large sandy beaches in the middle of which stood the rocky promontory that gave the resort its name. From 1963 onwards, the Languedoc seaside was the subject of a formidable development project with the aim of developing tourism from La Grande Motte to Saint Cyprien via Cap d'Agde and Port Barcarès. Today, Cap d'Agde is the number one tourist destination on the French coast and the number one marina in the metropolis.
