This 20th-century château is located in a rural village close to the famous fortified town of Navarrenx. Commissioned by a famous opera singer who was originally from the village, this super château has an estate of 6158m², with panoramic views of Jurançon vineyards and the Gave d’Oloron to the east and the Pyrénées mountains to the south. Constructed between 1914 and 1918, the bottom part of the château was built using local Arudy stone and the upper part was built using stone from Angoulême.
From the drive, stone steps lead up to the front door, which opens into a light and airy entrance hall. The ground floor comprises three tastefully decorated reception rooms – two with marble fireplaces – a music room/library and a kitchen. An east-facing dining terrace is accessible from the kitchen, which is bathed in sunlight during the morning for breakfast and partially shaded by lunchtime. An elegant wooden staircase in the entrance hall leads to the first floor and to a central salon and library. THE LOCAL AREA
The Béarn is one of the ancient French provinces in the south-western Pyrénées. It is close to the Spanish border, Pau, Lourdes, the picturesque Basque Country and the Atlantic coast. Toulouse, Bordeaux, San Sebastián and Bilbao are all within easy reach.
Popular with tourists all the year round for hiking, mountain-biking, white-water rafting and fishing, the region also offers a range of winter sports (downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing) with easy access to numerous ski stations. For those preferring beach-based activities (especially surfing) the famous resorts of the Atlantic coast are just an hour and half away (Biarritz, Saint Jean de Luz, Hendaye, Hossegor...)
If your interests are gastronomic, visit the daily markets throughout the Béarn and Basque Country to sample local delicacies, such as tasty Bayonne ham or fabulous brebis, which is a cheese made using milk from sheep. The famous “Ossau-Iraty” brebis can be bought direct from farms in the nearby Vallée d’Ossau, or you’ll find it at any of the farmers’ markets in the local towns and villages.
Film buffs might be interested to know that the nearby town of Oloron-Ste-Marie and several of the picturesque villages of the Vallée d’Aspe have recently been chosen as film locations, most notably for two French films starring the Oscar winner, Jean Dujardin, and an English film, "Waiting for Anya" based on the Michael Morpurgo book set in France in the Second World War.
