Tucked away in a verdant countryside setting, this lovely farmhouse feels cosy, welcoming and totally private. A highly sought-after feature, the peaceful inner courtyard adds to the property’s desirability because many people transform their courtyards into outdoor rooms, combining furniture and mature plants - and even water features - to great effect. If your plan is to convert the farmhouse and barns into holiday accommodation, the inner courtyard could be a lovely area for serving meals, or it could just be a shady sitting area where guests can relax together and enjoy the tranquillity of the surroundings. Read more ...

Built in 1850, the huge potential of this property with its 5 hectares of land with a river is self-evident. Although in need of redecoration, once updated this stone-built farmhouse would make a perfect family home, especially for anybody working in Pau, Mourenx, Lacq or Oloron-Ste-Marie, which are all within easy commuting distance. This is also a popular holiday area and the farmhouse could be a delightful holiday home, if that is what you are looking for – or the currently unconverted barns, hayloft and chai are ideal for creating holiday accommodation.

Many of the original exterior and interior architectural features of the farmhouse have been preserved. Much of the woodwork, including the staircase, dates back to the 19th century, as does the solid stone fireplace in the dining area and the characterful colombage wall in the inner courtyard. The layout of this super property is also very convenient, with easy access to the garden or to the courtyard where you can relax with a glass of local Jurançon or Madiran wine during the long summer evenings…

Situated near the town of Monein, the farmhouse is in a great location for families and for holidaymakers. As well as being close to the beautiful village of Lucq-de-Béarn, the Atlantic beach resorts to the west about an hour away, as are the Pyrénées ski resorts to the south. The Medieval riverside market town of Oloron-Ste-Marie is a 15-minute drive, the city of Pau, and the verdant Basque Country are under 30 minutes away - and the Spanish border and the Pyrénées are less than an hour away.

Ground level:
- an interior courtyard
- an open-plan living room with a dining area and a fireplace
- a sitting room
- a study/office
- a kitchen
- a shower room and WC (accessed from the courtyard)

First floor:
- four bedrooms
- a family bathroom

Attic floor:
- a fifth bedroom
- unconverted loft space, sufficient for a further bedroom and bathroom

The two barns and the chai could easily provide extra living space for the farmhouse or be converted into Bed and Breakfast rooms or self-catering gîtes. The barns are in very good condition and share an attic floor (the old hayloft) which runs around three sides of the courtyard.

The farmhouse is set in partially enclosed grounds divided in two by a small river, making it ideal for horses, and is mainly flat meadow, with about 1.4 hectares of woodland. Planted with mature trees and shrubs, there is ample room for installing a swimming pool, a pool house with a summer kitchen, a children’s play area and even a tennis court. The land would also be suitable for horses.

Béarnaise farmhouses with internal courtyards are highly sought after! As well as using the farmhouse, the barns could easily be transformed into self-catering gîte accommodation or Bed and Breakfast suites and the interior courtyard is perfect for outdoor dining. Other ideas might be to use the building for a restaurant, a wine bar or a tea shop, or for hosting events such as weddings. It could also be used for accommodating small groups participating in leisure activity holidays, such as painting, cooking or yoga… In addition, there would be enough room to keep horses and the surrounding traffic-free lanes would be ideal for equestrian holidays.

The attractive Medieval town of Monein, just 7 minutes away by car, has a good choice of shops, bars and restaurants, along with a weekly market every Monday morning. The town has a swimming pool, a medical centre, a vet, a primary school and a collège (11 – 15 years old). Older children can choose to attend a lycée in Oloron-Ste-Marie, Mauléon-Licharre, Mourenx or Pau. The collège-lycées in this area are excellent and offer a range of studying options (some in English), as well as specialising in theatre, sports and even horse riding! There is also an international school in Pau which teaches in English and awards UK qualifications.

Monein is easily accessible from the airports in Pau, Biarritz and Tarbes-Lourdes. There are also railway stations at Pau, Oloron-St-Marie and Orthez. Monein is on a regular bus route to Pau, but there is also a request bus service which has out-of-town bus stops, travelling between the tiny villages throughout the area.
