If your French dream is to live somewhere surrounded by beautiful, rolling countryside but to be just a short distance away from local shops, bars and restaurants, this gorgeous maison de maître more than fits the bill! The house can be arranged as a six-bedroom family home 3/4-bedroom home and a separate 2/3-bedroom apartment, giving immediate letting potential. The unusually attractive, ancient barn next to the house includes an ancient two-bedroom house and could be converted to provide additional living space of at least 400m² for gîtes or B&B rooms. A second, more recent, barn opposite has two floors, each of 100m². There is also a delightful garden house (30m²) which would make a lovely, romantic studio gîte. Read more ...

Built in 1826, this elegant Béarnaise maison de maître occupies a commanding hilltop position and has panoramic views of the Pyrenées to the south and towards Pau, to the north. With 280m² of habitable living space, the house is a beautiful six-bedroom family home. By locking off one of the bedrooms, the house can be instantly re-arranged as a 3/4 family home and a separate 2/3-bedroom apartment with a living room/kitchenette and its own entrance, giving immediate letting potential.

The maison de maître retains many of its original 19th-century architectural features, including two huge open fireplaces and the magnificent original staircase incorporates some beautiful carvings, the handrail finishing in a snake’s head over a phoenix. Most unusually, there is also an original long-case grandfather clock which is built into the rear wall of the stairwell (and so will obviously be staying)!

Downstairs there is a large kitchen with a huge traditional fireplace with a wood-burner, a huge living room, also with a fireplace and woodburner, a bathroom, separate WC and a utility room. There is also a second living room with a kitchenette for the separate apartment and another separate WC. Upstairs, there are six bedrooms and a family bathroom. The attic floor could be converted to provide two or three further B & B bedrooms (useable space about 80m²).

Outside, the beautiful gardens and grounds provide ample space for installing a swimming pool and a summer kitchen area, which would be greatly appreciated by holiday guests. There is also a lovely terrace outside the kitchen which benefits from the morning sun, so is ideal for serving breakfast. The huge, ancient barn is next to the house could be converted to provide at least 400m² of additional guest accommodation, perhaps retaining an open-plan part for group activities, such as painting workshops or yoga retreats, or for hosting weddings, celebrations or corporate events…

A delightful garden house (30m²) above the barn is tucked away in the vegetable garden and would make a romantic studio gîte. There is also a second, more recent, barn opposite the house of 100m² on each of two floors. The upper floor (drive level) includes a closed garage and a professional cold-room, whilst the lower floor (opening onto the field below) could be converted to provide additional B&B rooms or a gîte.

The property is located in the “Vallée d’Ossau”, famous for the river Ossau (the “Gave d’Ossau”) and the local sheep’s cheese, which is called “Ossau-Iraty”. The city of Pau is 25km north of the property – the Pyrénées ski resorts and Spanish border are to the south. If you fancy a day on the beach in Biarritz or St-Jean-de-Luz, the Atlantic coastal resorts are under 90 minutes away, as are the pretty Basque farming villages with their distinctive white houses and dark red shutters.

Ground floor:

THE POTENTIAL!

This rustic maison de maître has limitless potential! It would easily accommodate three generations of one family, if you’re looking for a large family house. Alternatively, the six-bedroom house is ideal for creating up-market Bed and Breakfast rooms, without
requiring much extra investment.

The older barn could also be converted into Bed and Breakfast suites or self-catering gîtes or even rental accommodation for groups, with enough room left over for an open-plan area for hosting weddings, celebrations, corporate events, or leisure holidays for painting, cooking, walking, yoga… The more modern barn could be used for equestrian activities, or converted to provide B&B rooms or a gîte, with a totally private aspect facing away from the house. Finally, the lovely little garden house would make a romantic studio gîte!

THE LOCAL AREA

The nearby towns of Rébénacq (9 minutes), Sévignacq-Meyracq (13 minutes), Arudy (17 minutes) and Nay (19 minutes) are all easily accessible from the farmhouse, where you will find a good choice of supermarkets, restaurants and bars. Arudy has a market every Tuesday and Saturday morning and Sévignacq-Meyracq has an annual Christmas market in mid-December. For a much bigger choice of shops and amenities - and a university - the city of Pau is about 30 minutes away.

The area has many excellent schools and children are transported to school by bus, which stops at the bottom of the hill down from the farmhouse. There is also a regular bus to Pau which leaves from Gourette and passes through Arudy, Sévignacq-Meyracq and Rébénacq.

Rébénacq, Sévignacq-Meyracq and Arudy are all in the Vallée d’Ossau, which is named after the Ossau river, the “Gave d’Ossau”. The valley extends to the Spanish border, where you can ski at Gourette, or catch a small open train at Artouste to travel high into the mountains. The area is also known for its sheep’s cheese, Ossau-Iraty. The GR10 is accessible at Gourette and it is possible to join the Chemin de St-Jacques-de-Compostelle (Voie d’Arles) at Arudy before arriving in the Medieval market town of Oloron-Ste-Marie.
