THE LOCAL AREA

Oloron-Sainte-Marie is in the Béarn, one of the ancient French provinces in the south-western Pyrénées. It is close to the Spanish border, Pau, Lourdes, the picturesque Basque Country and the Atlantic coast. Toulouse, Bordeaux, San-Sebastián and Bilbao are all within easy reach. Founded by the Romans, the town lies on the pilgrim route the Chemin-de-St-Jacques-de-Compostelle.

Popular with tourists all the year round for hiking, mountain-biking, white-water rafting and fishing, the region also offers a range of winter sports (downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing) with easy access to numerous ski stations. For those preferring beach-based activities (especially surfing) the famous resorts of the Atlantic coast are just an hour and a half away (Biarritz, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Hendaye, Hossegor...) There is also an Aeroclub for small planes and gliders in nearby Herrère.

The mairie and the two weekly markets of the medieval town of Oloron-Sainte-Marie are just a short walk away, as are local shops, restaurants and pretty riverside walks along the Gave d’Oloron. The town has recently been officially classified by the French government as a “ville active et sportive” and has many sporting facilities and cycle routes. There is also a free shuttle bus service for getting about.

Despite its relatively small size (population 10,000), Oloron offers an unusual number of cultural events and activities, both amateur and professional and its excellent and well-stocked modern médiathèque, set glamorously where the Gave d’Ossau and the Gave d’Aspe join to become the Gave d’Oloron, won its architect the prestigious Equerre d'Argent prize.

Film buffs might be interested to know that the town of Oloron-Sainte-Marie and several of the picturesque villages of the Vallée d’Aspe have recently been chosen as film locations, most notably for two French films ("Le Daim" and "I Feel Good") starring the Oscar winner, Jean Dujardin, and an English film, "Waiting for Anya" based on the Michael Morpurgo book set in France in the Second World War. Not only is the stunning, unspoilt countryside of the Béarn perfect for filmmakers, but enthusiastic locals are often encouraged to volunteer as extras to appear alongside the international film stars - next time, that could be you!
