This unique pair of country houses on the edge of a hamlet close to Aigues Vives is an opportunity to create a character residence to your own specification.

The Cathar stronghold of Minerve is about 10 km away, the Mediterranean is 45 km. One can swim in local rivers at Cailhol or Bize-Minervois. There are weekly village markets in St. Chinian (17 km)and Olonzac (13 km).

There is a shop, school, bakery/café, two restaurants, hairdresser's, wine caveau and post office in Aigues-Vives, 3 km away; the baker, grocery van and butcher pass regularly. Narbonne is 27 km, Béziers 40 km and Carcassonne 50 km. Airports at Béziers and Carcassonne are approx an hour's drive away, and Spain is an hour and half. Read more ...

The main house has a large dining/living area with a large traditional fireplace. To the right, a kitchen and en-suite bedroom/shower room overlook the valley of the river Cessière, with its vineyards and garrigue. Straight ahead, two more rooms face east and south, and a wide corridor leads to the winding tiled staircase. Most of the floors are terracotta tiled, and the original panelled doors are still in place.

At first-floor level is a large south-facing bathroom, and a large roof space with impressive timberwork. There is space for four good-sized bedrooms plus two bathrooms. One could create a superb roof terrace of 20m² facing the valley, with permission (in principle there would be no problem).

On the lower level, the huge 'cave' or wine barn occupies the same area as the house above. Next to this is the smaller house, a little gem which has its original rustic stone sink, a large chimney and 'potager', the forerunner of the kitchen stove, and all its original features including a lovely stone and terracotta winding staircase. Its windows face the valley and the view; a glazed door from the living/kitchen gives onto a 15m² sun terrace and ground floor level. Upstairs is a bedroom with exposed beams, and a shower room. There is also a parking space next to the terrace.

The hamlet, which has its origins in Roman times, is situated in the midst of unspoilt countryside. It is wonderful for walking and cycling; far from supermarkets, motorways and housing estates, nature flourishes, with almond, apricot, cherry, olive and fig trees, wild flowers in abundance, birds - nightingales, cuckoos, orioles, hoopoes... Also, there is a charming listed chapel in the village.
