This is one of the most extraordinary houses I have ever seen and really needs visiting to appreciate.
According to the owner the building was originally part of a twelfth century priory, then burnt down during the religious wars of the fifteenth century and subsequently rebuilt in the seventeenth century. There is a lot of history here!
The house actually consists of three separate dwellings which all connect internally making it something of a maze. On street level there are two garages (one with an internal staircase to the first floor) and a stoned paved entrance hallway beyond the impressive oak front door. To the left of this is a cave dug into the solid rock.
A stone staircase leads to the first floor which contains most of the living accommodation- each of the living units opens into a courtyard garden- at the back wall of this is a games room and a covered portico giving a real Mediterranean feel to the courtyard. A gate at the far end of the courtyard leads into the main garden- this is split into three sections by box hedges and contains a variety of mature trees. Read more ...
Two of the bedrooms are on the second floor in the (insulated) attic but the rest of the bedrooms and living rooms are all on the first floor. This is a very flexible building which would lend itself to being a lovely, rambling family home or could be sub-divided once more to make gîtes or a chambre d'hotes.
The building is located in a quiet, residents only street in Bourpeuil, five minutes' walk from the centre of L'Isle Jourdain which lies on the other side of the River Vienne. Bourpeuil itself has two restaurants within walking distance.
L’Isle Jourdain is a thriving market town on the River Vienne. The town has a good selection of shops, bars, restaurants and a supermarket. There is a municipal swimming pool and tennis courts.
In this part of the Vienne there are many marked footpaths which are popular with ramblers and the town is a good base for water-based activities including fishing and canoeing. For the brave at heart one can even try bungee-jumping off the old railway viaduct.
The area is easily accessed via the international airports at Limoges and Poitiers (Ryanair and Flybe) or by TGV from London to Poitiers.
