This great house was once the Tannery owner's house at the foot of the Chateau in Châtillon-sur-Indre. The garden is a joy to lose oneself in with many places to sit by the river Indre and ponder the important things in life. The above-ground pool has its own cabin with sauna and shower and a fine view up to the Church in the old town.
The house itself has a beautiful ground floor arrangement of principal rooms revolving around the generous hall which is used as the dining space. On the floors above, there are ample bedrooms, bathrooms and toilets all of good size so this could lend itself to a commercial operation, especially with its prominent location. Chambre d'hôtes, or perhaps a restaurant in the garden overlooking the river, plenty of parking outside the Tannery and a superb location with views to the key historic parts of Châtillon. The historic town of Châtillon-sur-Indre boasts a good supermarket and large DIY store as well as bars, restaurants, leisure facilities including swimming pool, doctor, schools, veterinary practice, banks, pharmacies and so on. The house lies at the foot of the hill on the river Indre and less than 200m from the Castle. Battles were fought between the armies of Richard the Lionheart and Phillippe Auguste before the Treaty of 1193 ceding ownership of the Castle to the French side. Several French Kings are later understood to have stayed at the Castle.
Much more shopping and facilities in the Royal City of Loches (22km) and in Châteauroux (47km) - the regional centre. Some of the best Loire valley chateaux are within easy reach and Zoo Parc Beauval, rated in the top zoos of the world for its rare breed survival programmes, is about 25 minutes drive away. A Giant Panda was born there a couple of years ago and recent arrivals include a baby rhino.
The Tannery appears to have been an important part of life in Châtillon and there is a model of this, the Tannery Master's house, in the museum by the castle. The house is conveniently entered from the side gate with drive-in access, new garage and straight into the hard landscaped part of the garden, next to the house. The old garage gives one point of access to the house, a few steps and a more impressive door provides access into the house.
•Ground Floor.
Entrance from the garden into living area which is split into 3 distinct rooms, music, office and seating. Office and seating areas have large doors into the hall/dining area with black and white checkerboard tiled floor, polished beams, highly ornate carved fireplace with woodburner and grand staircase leading to first floor. Also off the hall, fitted kitchen and thence to the old garage/workshop.
•First Floor.
Up the impressive staircase with rooflighting to a landing with beautiful wrought iron balustrading. Main bedroom with ensuite bathroom/wc, 4 further bedrooms, one with staircase to second floor/mezzanine area which has access to the loft over the two main bedrooms.
The old garage has one of two accesses to the basement area, the other being from the garden.
