THE LOCAL AREA
A good choice of supermarkets, restaurants and bars can be found in the villages in the surrounding area - and there are local farmers’ markets most days of the week. For a much bigger choice of shops and amenities, the city of Pau is less than 20 minutes away and has just about everything you could possibly need, including excellent schools and a university. Pau also has an International school, which teaches the English national curriculum.
The château is close to the Vallée d’Ossau, which is named after the Ossau river, the Gave d’Ossau. The valley extends to the Spanish border, where you can ski at Gourette, or catch a small open train at Artouste to travel high into the mountains. The area is also known for its sheep’s cheese, Ossau-Iraty. The GR10 is accessible at Gourette and it is possible to join the Chemin de St-Jacques-de-Compostelle at Arudy to join the main route at the Medieval market town of Oloron-Ste-Marie.
