Beautifully renovated over many years by the current owners, this very spacious farmhouse of 235m² has so much to offer! Perfect for a family home, a holiday home or for creating a boutique B&B business/gîte, the property is set in extensive gardens and grounds, which have been planted with exotic trees and shrubs – and with no near neighbours, peace and tranquillity are guaranteed. Read more ...

Built in 1890, this characterful Béarnaise farmhouse is in a traditional L-shape, with a two-storey barn adjoining one side of the building and an attractive (working) bread oven built on the other. A paved, south-facing terrace in front of the farmhouse catches the sun all day long and is a wonderful spot for outdoor dining. Beyond the terrace, the verdant gardens and grounds have been planted with a huge variety of exotic flowers and shrubs - and huge, shady trees ensure complete privacy.

The farmhouse has been renovated and decorated in a warm, colourful style and the practical layout is ideal for a large family home/holiday home. In addition, many of the building’s original features have been restored and beautifully incorporated into the décor, such as exposed stone walls, exposed wooden beams and a lovely open fireplace in the dining area where a huge wood-fired range has been installed.

The ground floor of the farmhouse comprises a kitchen with a dining area and access to the terrace, a huge sitting room, a room which could be used as a ground-floor bedroom/office/study, a shower room and a WC. Wooden stairs lead up to the first floor and four bedrooms, a dressing/laundry room and a family bathroom. The second floor is currently one open-plan bedroom with a sitting area, but could easily be transformed into two separate bedrooms, if desired.

The unconverted barn adjoining the farmhouse has a small upper floor and could easily be used for extra accommodation in the main house, for transforming into B&B bedroom suites or for creating a gîte (permission required). The property also has a shelter for two horses, which could also generate paying guests! There is a marked European horse trail not far from the house and subsequently there is a growing market for overnight accommodation where horses are welcome as well!

This lovely farmhouse is close to Ogeu-les-Bains, which is famous for its bottled mineral water from springs discovered as far back as the Middle Ages. The town is also classed as AOC for Ossau-Iraty cheese and even produces cheese made from horse milk! If you have a family, you will be spoilt for choice for schools in the area – and if you enjoy visiting the coast and the mountains, the farmhouse could not be better placed for reaching coastal resorts and skiing resorts for fun days out!

Ogeu-les-Bains is in the Béarn in the south-western Pyrénées. It is close to the Spanish border, Pau, Lourdes, the picturesque Basque Country and the Atlantic coast. Toulouse, Bordeaux, San-Sebastián and Bilbao are all within easy reach.

If your interests are gastronomic, visit the daily markets throughout the Béarn and Basque Country to sample local delicacies, such as tasty Bayonne ham or fabulous brebis, which is a cheese made using milk from sheep. The famous Ossau-Iraty brebis can be bought direct from farms in the nearby Vallée d’Ossau, or you’ll find it at any of the farmers’ markets in the local towns and villages.

Popular with tourists all the year round for hiking, mountain-biking, white-water rafting and fishing, the region also offers a range of winter sports (downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing) with easy access to numerous ski stations. For those preferring beach-based activities (especially surfing) the famous resorts of the Atlantic coast are just 90 minutes away (Biarritz, Saint Jean de Luz, Hendaye, Hossegor...)

Film buffs might be interested to know that the nearby town of Oloron-Ste-Marie and several of the picturesque villages of the Vallée d’Aspe have recently been chosen as film locations, most notably for two French films starring the Oscar winner, Jean Dujardin, and an English film, "Waiting for Anya" based on the Michael Morpurgo book set in France in the Second World War. Not only is the stunning, unspoilt countryside of the Béarn perfect for filmmakers, but enthusiastic locals are often encouraged to volunteer as extras to appear alongside the international film stars - next time, that could be you!
