In Deux Sevres we’re a little way off the beaten track - in fact most days its not even audible from from here. We have gentle winding lanes perfect for cycling and rambling, plenty of water and sunshine perfect for growing apples and plenty of apples, perfect for any recipe requiring apples. To the South, Niort connects us to the the motorway and the TGV networks and so to the rest of France. Closer to home, there’s no shortage of history in Parthenay and Bressuire. But what we have in greatest abundance is peace and quiet. As far as I know Deux Sevres has yet to follow the example of some other departments and chosen a catchy slogan - but if it did my vote would be ‘Take Deux Sèvres … and Relax”
In April 2016 I gave up my job as a project manager for a UK bank and moved here with my wife and son. We’d been exploring France on and off for about three years, looking for a place where we could enjoy a better quality of life; somewhere peaceful open and friendly - preferably with good food, longer summers and milder winters. We finally settled on our new habitat during a visit the preceding Christmas and then the race was on - the 495 mile hurdles. Naturally there were a few slips along the way but now we’re here, our son has settled into his new school and our new life is unfolding. So overall, definitely one of my more successful projects.
