La Mayenne is a northern department within Les Pays de la Loire. Here you are properly in France, but still within 2 hours drive of the cross Channel ferry port at Caen. The area is known for its beautiful, rolling countryside, traditional cuisine and history. Lovely rivers and wooded valleys abound with water sports being very popular and canoeing, sailing and windsurfing being offered throughout the area together with rock climbing, abseiling and potholing. If you prefer something less strenuous then there are numerous pretty villages to explore where history surrounds you, whether your interest lies in the world of the Romans or the Medieval there is something for you here. The Roman town of Jublains is a must see with amphitheatre, fort, baths, temple and a great museum. The town of Lassay-les-Chateaux with its 12th Century keep overlooking the lake with lovely rose gardens is a must see. The Loire is the 'Land of the Chateaux' where the wealthy had their country retreats and you can understand why they chose to when you have sampled what there is on offer. The town of Mayenne lies either side of the river, rising up on both sides with the newly restored chateau and its protective walls making a wonderful viewing point for the town. There are plenty of shops to suit all tastes from boutiques to delicatessens. Peace and quiet & hustle and bustle, if you want one not far from the other then this is the area for you!
My wife and I have been spending time in many regions of France for some years and long ago decided we would like to retire to France. After 40 years of working for a major American corporation in Central London, I was able to retire early and start the search for a home in earnest. It started with a limit of 2 hrs driving from the Channel Tunnel but slowly edged towards Normandy and finally stopped just into Mayenne at Ambrieres Les Vallées. We bought our house through Leggett and, in conversation with our agent, it was suggested that I might want to work with Leggett. Although I don't need to work, being a Leggett agent is a great way to meet people in the local communities and to contribute to the vitality of the area.View Pays-de-la-Loire Information Homepage
