About my area

The famous Royal Abbey, founded in the ninth century to house a relic of Saint John the Baptist (apparently his head!) from which the town takes its name and it is on the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela. Ideally situated, you can easily get around to Cognac, Saintes, the coastal towns of Fouras & Royan, the islands of Ile D'Oleron and Ile de Re, and the beautiful La Rochelle which is less than an hour away. Add the budget airlines flying to La Rochelle, Poitiers and Bordeaux International airport and Paris under 3 hours on the TGV from Surgeres – it’s a great place to base yourself. With the superb sandy beaches of the west coast accessable within an hour - there is so much to keep you busy here! It is a beautiful and special place to live.

About me

I live in the architecturally beautiful and historic town of St Jean D'Angély in the heart of the Charente Maritime. This is a very unspoilt area of France and has a great climate, apparently the second sunniest region after the Cote D’Azur, and we normally enjoy long, hot summers and mild winters. St Jean D’Angely has a twice weekly market offering seasonal local produce, superb fresh fish, oysters and mussels from the nearby coast. It also has a good range of bars and restaurants from French brasseries to seafood and a very good Indian restaurant.
