French property region guidePAYS DE LA LOIRE Vendee (85), Loire Atlantique (44),Maine-et-Loire (49), Mayenne (53), Sarthe (72) An area of gorgeous landscapes with the Loire river cutting through and a decent coastline. Many second homes in the area and popular with the French. Nantes, the regional capital, is one of the trendiest places to live in France, whilst Le Mans is much cheaper. The region's coastline plays host to picturesque fishing ports, small seaside resorts and sloping sandy beaches. There is a great rental market, particularly in the Vendee and Loire-Atlantique departments where seaside properties gain rapidly in value. There is a well established British community particularly in the Vendee. The main attraction of the Vendee is the mild climate with sunshine, some say, to rival the Riviera. Transport links are good with direct flights to Nantes, La Rochelle and Poitiers. Mayenne is more thinly populated and agricultural. However, it is not all that far from the Channel ports and cheaper than the Vendee. The Maine-et-Loire is predicted to be an up and coming region with excellent transport links both for planes and trains. About 20% of properties in this region are second homes, mostly along the coast. Further inland, bargains are still to be found.
