Please note that the two properties included in this sale may be purchased separately, the château for 526923€ (reference 96818CEL64) and the gatehouse for 287550€ (reference 96591CEL64).
This 20th-century château is located in a rural village close to the famous fortified town of Navarrenx. Commissioned by a famous opera singer who was originally from the village, this super château has an estate of 6158m², with panoramic views of Jurançon vineyards and the Gave d’Oloron to the east and the Pyrénées mountains to the south. Constructed between 1914 and 1918, the bottom part of the château was built using local Arudy stone and the upper part was built using stone from Angoulême.
From the drive, stone steps lead up to the front door, which opens into a light and airy entrance hall. The ground floor comprises three tastefully decorated reception rooms – two with marble fireplaces – a music room/library and a kitchen. An east-facing dining terrace is accessible from the kitchen, which is bathed in sunlight during the morning for breakfast and partially shaded by lunchtime. A wine cellar, workshops and a boiler room are located in the basement.
From the entrance hall, a wooden staircase leads up to the first floor and a central sitting room/library. From here, there are doors to four bedrooms, one of which is a master bedroom suite with a dressing room and an en suite bathroom. Each of the four bedrooms has an en suite bathroom, which are actually in each of the château’s four towers.
On the second floor, a central gallery gives access to five bedrooms and a bathroom. At the end you can go up to the huge attic. The attic is full height (2.5m) and could easily be converted into more living space, such as a private open-plan loft apartment for the owners. In addition, the views would be stunning!
Located in the grounds is the château’s gatehouse, which has been converted into three rental apartments. Built in 1851 as a coach house, the building was then used as a gatehouse when the château was built in 1914. Many of the building’s original architectural features have been reserved, such as a bread oven in the kitchen, a dog kennel in one of the exterior decorative pillars and a hen house in the matching pillar opposite!
The gatehouse is currently divided into three separate apartments, but with seven bedrooms in total, the layout of the property could be reconfigured to create a wonderful family home or a luxurious Bed and Breakfast business, if preferred.
The château and gatehouse are located in a small Béarnaise village close to delightful bastide town of Navarrenx. Navarrenx attracts visitors all year round, along with any pilgrims who are walking towards Spain and the Pyrénées along the Chemin de St-Jacques-de-Compostelle.
The Béarn borders the verdant Basque Country, which is just minutes away – and there is easy access to several Pyrénées ski resorts, lakes and rivers for watersports and numerous beaches on the Atlantic coast. The Medieval market town of Oloron-Ste-Marie is just a 19-minute drive away, where you will find numerous shops and a twice-weekly farmers’ market. If you have a family, you will be spoilt for choice for excellent schools in the area.

The gardens and grounds of 6724m² comprise the château’s park of 6158m² and a small garden in front of the conciergerie of 566m². The park is planted with mature trees and shrubs, ensuring complete privacy from the road. A sweeping drive leads up to the back of the château and the enclosed grounds slope down at the front of the building. There is ample flat land for installing a swimming pool, along with terraces, a summer kitchen and a pool house.
The gatehouse has two garden areas enclosed by a wrought-iron fence: a small private garden at the back of the property and a larger garden with a pebble terrace area at the front. From the front garden, there are lovely views of the château, the Gave and the surrounding countryside.
This CHÂTEAU is perfect for using as a luxurious family home or holiday home, or for creating a tourism-related business. There is much demand for high-quality holiday accommodation in the Béarn and the property would be absolutely ideal for a boutique hotel, a Bed and Breakfast business or hosting magnificent weddings, celebrations and corporate events. It would also be perfect for leisure activity holidays, such as painting workshops, yoga retreats or wine-tasting and cookery courses. Murder Mystery weekends are also a possibility! Alternatively, the property could be transformed into a beautiful restaurant, which are also in short supply in this area…
The GATEHOUSE also has great potential thanks to its very flexible layout. The new owner might want to rent out the three apartments as they are or rent it out as one huge holiday home. It would also be ideal for Bed and Breakfast guests, or serve as a private house for the owners while guests are staying in the château.

THE LOCAL AREA
The Béarn is one of the ancient French provinces in the south-western Pyrénées. It is close to the Spanish border, Pau, Lourdes, the picturesque Basque Country and the Atlantic coast. Toulouse, Bordeaux, San Sebastián and Bilbao are all within easy reach.
Popular with tourists all the year round for hiking, mountain-biking, white-water rafting and fishing, the region also offers a range of winter sports (downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing) with easy access to numerous ski stations. For those preferring beach-based activities (especially surfing) the famous resorts of the Atlantic coast are just an hour and half away (Biarritz, Saint Jean de Luz, Hendaye, Hossegor...)
If your interests are gastronomic, visit the daily markets throughout the Béarn and Basque Country to sample local delicacies, such as tasty Bayonne ham or fabulous brebis, which is a cheese made using milk from sheep. The famous “Ossau-Iraty” brebis can be bought direct from farms in the nearby Vallée d’Ossau, or you’ll find it at any of the farmers’ markets in the local towns and villages.
Film buffs might be interested to know that the nearby town of Oloron-Ste-Marie and several of the picturesque villages of the Vallée d’Aspe have recently been chosen as film locations, most notably for two French films starring the Oscar winner, Jean Dujardin, and an English film, "Waiting for Anya" based on the Michael Morpurgo book set in France in the Second World War. Not only is the stunning, unspoilt countryside of the Béarn perfect for filmmakers, but enthusiastic locals are often encouraged to volunteer as extras to appear alongside the international film stars - next time, that could be you!
