This abbaye is the ancient heart of the village of Clairac. It is comprised of two vast buildings. The riverfront building features about 800 m2 of useable rooms served by hallways and arcade-lined terraces. One nice feature is that many of the large rooms are river-view rooms on all levels looking southward thus toward the sun onto the peaceful and pristine Lot river. The second building is comprised of around 320m2 of useable space much of which is open-space and can made into a dining or leisure area. The roof has been revised recently. Read more ...

The two buildings articulate around the interior courtyard and the riverfront courtyard. The riverfront courtyard is around 600m2 and is flat with a few ornamental trees. It has a stairway leading down to the riverfront. A jogging path maintained by the municipality runs down the westernmost edge, across from which is a riverfront senior-living facility. Restaurants, post-office, markets, cafés, summer riverfront swimming, supermarkets, schools and other historical buildings and much more all within walking distance. The buildings have been recognized as historical by the French culture ministry and there is a very complete Wikipedia article tracing the history of this building back to the early middle ages, around 12th century, apparently. Just look up Abbaye de Clairac (article in French). Truly amazing. Visibly, much of the buildings appear to have been undergone additions and overhauls in the late 1800’s, as the interiors are in the style of municipal or educational facilities from early 20th century. The buildings were used as a school until the 1960’s, and then were used to host a local museum attraction. Today, the Abbaye de Clairac has DNA, the sound structure, the natural and historical character, and the KEY LOT-ET-GARONNE LOCATION to attract developers notably wanting to make a historical hotel, luxury riverfront apartments, or possibly a mixed lodging/leisure/dining/shopping center, or an educational institution, etc.
