Nearby Josselin has been awarded the status Petite Cité de Caractère (literally ‘little city of character’). Every Bastille Day (14th July) Josselin recounts its historic past with the hugely popular Festival Médiéval when the whole town dresses up in period costume – well worth a visit. The impressive Château de Josselin was originally constructed of wood around 1000AD, and was added to and rebuilt a number of times over the next 500 years. Well worth a visit.
Ploermel, founded in the 6th century, has a strong association with the characters from the legends of King Arthur, a huge lake with a beach with plenty of water based activities plus 9 hole golf course. Although by contrast with Josselin the town centre is more modern, it boasts a 19th century astronomical clock with 10 panels depicting the solar system which has been classed as a national monument.
Access to this area is very easy from ferries of St Malo & Dinard Airport or Rennes Airport. It is also an easy drive to Roscoff, Brest, Nantes, Caen and Cherbourg.
