Finistère is the most westerly department of Brittany with its name meaning the equivalent of Cornwall's 'Land's End'. It has more than just that in common with Cornwall, with its rugged, picturesque countryside, strong regional identity and many miles of coastline scattered with clean, sandy beaches they are quite alike. In fact Finistère is the most coastal department of France accounting for almost one quarter of the country's overall coastline and almost half of its towns and villages are located at the coast. Bordered to the north by the English Channel, to the west by the Irish Sea and to the south by the Atlantic Ocean, this is the perfect location for those who love the sea and of course, delicious fresh fish and seafood. Over millions of years, waves and storms have shaped the rugged coastline, giving a wild beauty while the proximity of the Gulf Stream gives a gentle climate. The capital of Finistère, Brest has as an average of 1732 hours of sunshine per year (comparison Toulouse 2,000 hours per year) and average maximum temperatures of around 22 degrees Celsius. Brest is a vibrant university town which also boasts an international airport and due to its location as a seaport, it has been used by the navy from 1631 when Cardinal Richelieu first ordered the construction of a harbor through to the present day. Other famous towns include Quimper, famous for its pottery, historic Concarneau with its ramparts and fortified cold town plus five delightful little 'cités de caractères': Guerlesquin, Le Faou, Locronan, Pont-Croix and Roscoff. Finistère has superb transport links, Brittanys toll free roads make it easy to access a host of ports and airports, but the region is served directly by the port at Roscoff, the airport at Brest and TGV services to stations including Brest and Morlaix.
