The Auvergne region has the largest national park in France known for its mountain ranges and dormant volcanoes with ski resorts, thermal towns, mountain villages, and medieval heritage. This region is a secret ski destination with 4 ski stations; Le Sancy, Super Besse, Chastreix and Le Lioran with lots of Winter sports. In the Summer it’s popular for walkers, Vtt mountain biking and motor racing, with some stunning scenery of lakes, rivers, volcanoes and amazing waterfalls. There is so much to do for everyone all year round. It is an unspoiled region of natural beauty and one that’s affordable. Is a great location whether to live to buy a holiday home or even a rental investment. The Auvergne has four departments Puy-de-Dôme (63), Cantal (15), Haute-Loire (43) and Allier (03).
I came to live in France in 2006 with my husband and three boys (then aged 7 and twins of 5). We left our very hectic life in the UK in search of our dream property. We found our stone house in a small hamlet 6km from a village. The property needed total renovation but with my husband having many building skill and lots of family enthusiasm this wasn’t a problem. The children went to a local French school and were bilingual within a year. They loved the freedom just enjoying the simplicity of the great outdoors, riding their bikes, fishing, climbing trees building dens and so on. We had 5 happy years living the good life. In 2011 we decided to move from the Creuse to the Puy-de-Dome department 63 of the Auvergne. We found a property in the old town of Le Mont Dore at the foot of the ski station Le Sancy. Our teenage boys now enjoy different sports all year round, skiing, ice-skating, Vtt mountain biking and bowling and much more.
