I live in Suise Normande – the hilly, craggy and undulating part of Calvados which is an exception to the neighbouring parts of Basse-Normandie. Even the French who visit this area are surprised by its different landscape and the possibilities to go abseiling, paragliding, canoeing, horse riding and other outdoor activities normally associated with more mountainous regions. Suisse Normande boasts an enormous amount of randonneées at all levels which will take you through orchards (cidre and calvados) and stunning landscapes. The buzzing, trendy city of Caen with the ferry link is within an hour’s drive and this proximity to the UK makes it and ideal area to live or holiday in France. Short visits are feasible as other ports as Le Havre, Cherbourg, Dieppe or St Malo are all within 1 1/2 hours. The serene way of life in Normandy offers you total relaxation from your busy life. Gardening is a major activity in Normandy as we have proper seasons with summers which are not too hot and winters which are (often) not too cold. Spring and autumn bring their own displays of apple blossom and colouring leaves. On top of all this is the rich history, distant and recent, which makes for interesting trips. You can choose your own pace of life. Paris is only 2 hours away by train or car and the proposed TGV will bring the French capital to within an hour. Come and be surprised in what we call ‘living heaven’.
I am Dutch and have lived in London for more than 25 years. We bought our farmhouse in Normandy 20 years ago as an ideal meeting place for Dutch and English relatives. Same distance for both parties. When my daughter left for university six years ago, we decided that there was an unfinished project in Normandy. Having started the renovation years before, we jumped at the chance to leave the UK for a calmer life. Since then we have not stopped. The land had been left to look after itself (euphorism for neglect), so we decided to plant lavender, as this was explained as an easy plant. We now have a lavender farm where we cultivate and distill lavender for organic essential oil. This is open to the public in summer months for free visits. Wee rebuilded part of our house and this gave us an opportunity to finish the attached barn and turned it into a bed and breakfast. The neighbours have all looked on in amazement and are very enthusiastic and encouraging about ‘the crazy english’. I have become an English woman in France ! As this is all very seasonal, I found Leggett Immobilier to work for and deal with my other passion, houses. I started studying as an interior architect and ended up as a graphic designer all those years ago and have worked as such for 25 years in London, but never forgetting my interest in architecture.
