Neil Harris, Independent Agent, says: | | High up in a hidden valley above Amélie les Bains, in a very small hamlet, this little house on the banks of a mountain stream would be perfect for someone looking for a real retreat for holidays or for all year round living. It feels like a lost valley far from civilisation but in fact its only fifteen minutes, by car from Amélie les Bains, and 45 minutes from the coast, and the school bus and the postman pass every day! | No need to pay for a pool here (although there is room for one), as you have a natural pool in the stream just at the bottom of the garden which slopes down in terraces to the river. Steps and a little path lead down to it from the house and it has water in it all year round. This is a paradise for nature lovers, kids and the young at heart.
The house itself was built about 40 years ago and is structurally sound but needs some internal finishing and dividing into rooms. With a little love and care it could be a lovely home for a small family.
It consists of, on the ground floor at the front, one big living room with a corner kitchen (this could easily be divided into 2 smaller rooms if wished.). A door leads to an area which currently has an ‘open plan’ bathroom and the stairs down to the garden level. Again, this would need dividing into two rooms.
Stairs lead down to a large hallway with a WC and access to the garden and to a large room currently used as a utility room, which in turn leads to a bedroom which could be divided into two smaller bedrooms.
Outside the garden is partly terraced to provide flat lawns on two levels and then slopes down to the river bank. Planted with bushes and mature trees included fruit trees it has shaded ares as well as sunny spots.
This is a real haven of peace and quiet with only the sound of the water and the birds singing to disturb the silence. On the other hand it’s not too isolated as there are several other houses just across the river. The road itself serves a few farmhouses before becoming a forest track.
The road itself is narrow and winding and attention is needed, but it’s a stunning drive along the side of a rocky gorge down into Amelie les bains, which has a good selection of small shops and a little ‘superette’ as well as a daily produce market and a weekly bigger market.
Amelie les Bains is a ‘spa’ (Thermes in French) where people come to take the waters for a variety of ailments as well as for beauty treatments and relaxation. This means that the town stays lively all year round and is well supplied with bars and restaurants. This also means that there is a potential for holiday letting all year round.
In the middle of the Vallespir area of the Pyrenees Orientales, Amélie is a good base for enjoying all that the area has to offer. Further up the valley the mountains get higher and there are lots of hiking routes. The Canigou Mountain is easily accessible from this side for good walkers. At the top of the valley is the little market town of Prats de Mollo close to the Spanish border.
In the other direction is the lively little town of Céret with its modern arts museum, early cherries and a wonderful Saturday market. From Céret it’s a rapid drive down to the coast where there is a choice of wonderful sandy beaches or rocky coves and picturesque fishing ports.
Perpigan is also about 40 minutes away and offers a good selections of shops both in its historic centre and in several good out-of-town commercial centres. Its also the administrative centre of the department.
The nearest Ski slopes are at Les Angles, in the next valley and accessible via Perpignan by a fast road.
