Arles sur Tech, 20 minutes from the Spanish border, is in the Vallespir area of the Pyrenees Orientales, nestled in the hills and sheltered from the fierce winds which this region is known for. Famous for its 13th century abbey, whose cloisters you can visit, with an ancient stone tomb which runs with water at certain times!
This is an ideal starting point for exploring the foothills of the Pyrenees – low enough down to have a warm climate and high enough up the valley for easy access to the mountains. On the banks of the river Tech which winds down the valley to the sea, an oasis of greenery in the springtime. The first slopes of the massif de Canigou start here and can be seen from the front windows.
Only 5 minutes down the valley, in a stunning setting on the edge of the gorge, is the lively spa town of Amélie les Bains where the French come to ‘take the waters’. Having visitors for the cures 11 months of the year, this little market town never has an ‘off’ season and many of the restaurants cafés etc stay open all year round. A daily market in the middle of the town and a weekly market on Thursdays keep the town supplied with fresh produce.
Céret is a little further down the valley and is a sub prefecture, meaning that most administrative tasks can be dealt with here. Céret also has an excellent market and is famous for its Modern Art Museum and its early cherries which are sold at the roadsides in early May. Céret has a very lively summer season with fetes and concerts and other amusements throughout the summer.
The beaches of the Mediterranean are about 45 minutes away, with a choice of fine sandy beaches from Argelés Plage going north, and the rock coast with its little ports and coves running south down to the Costa Brava in Spain.
