Continue over the border along the twisting coast road to sample the delights of the Spanish Costa Brava.
In the other direction a short drive brings you to the bustling market town of Céret which could be considered to be the gateway to the Pyrenees. Ceret has a wondeful market every Saturday, a lively summer program, and is famous for being the first place in France to have ripe cherries. The ‘Fête des Cerises’ (Cherry Festival) in May is not to be missed.
Beyond Céret, continue up the valley of the river Tech and you are in the mountains, full of spectacular places to visit by car or on foot. This area is particularly good for hiking as the mountains are not too high and there is very little snow, except on the top of the Canigou itself, making it possible to walk all year round.
The historic city of Perpignan, the departmental capital of the Pyrenées Orientales, is about 20 minutes drive and has the full complement of shopping and administrative facilities. It has very easy access from Le Boulou – The N9 which passes through the centre of Le Boulou takes you straight to, firstly the main commercial centre and , secondly, the city centre.
A perfect choice for anyone hesitating between the mountains and the sea.
The airports of Perpignan and Girona, in Spain, both Ryanair, are both an easy drive away. Girona in particular, less than an hour away, offers flights to many destinations, including a flight to Beauvais, north of Paris.
