A little history about the house – It is bomb proof, yes bomb proof !! A local tradesman who owned one of the tanneries that used to flourish on the banks of the river Vancou had the house constructed in 1942. The construction was in, I am told, Engineering bricks. Many of the old bills of work are still in the house. The gentleman was reputed to have been in favour with the Germans, possibly giving superb balls in the beautifull lounge and dining room for the commanding officers in the German army, whilst the French resistance used his cellars to hide allied soldiers and the secret pathways to move the allies and members of the resistance to safety. !! From the back of the house the garden, now a little tired and in need of permanant care, has an enourmous number of fruit trees, vines and that beautiful view. It has secret seating areas and large lawns leading from the tiered steps of the patio. At the bottom of the garden you can find the rabbit hutches and chicken pens. This is a fantastic property, once filled with fabulous antiques, even now with no special antiques left, it has the aura of regality, not perching over the river valley, but commanding over it. Some of the furniture left in the house is available for sale seperately. Bellac is just 40 minutes from Limoges airport with its low cost flights to britain AND belgium. And 60 minutes from Poitiers airport. Bellac also boasts a railway station, where the little country train can « whisk » you off for a day out in Limoges, or Poitiers, where you can also catch a TGV train to Paris.
