It's a commonplace to say that the history of every house is written in its walls. Ashlar, breeze-blocks, bricks or rubble; the mute stones always speak of one time or another. In this case there were words as well. Four quartets of finely-incised stanzas built into the main wing provide a tantalising clue to what spirit moved the construction of this exceptional house. One strikes home more immediately than the others; it reads SI TU VIENS PARTAGER NOTRE LUMIERE BLONDE SALUT ! MAIS SI TU VEUX LA PARTAGER LONGTEMPS NE VIENS QU'AVEC TON COEUR, N'APPORTE RIEN DU MONDE ET NE RACONTE PAS CE QUE DISENT LES GENS Which, being freely translated reads - "If you come to enjoy our clear light Welcome! But if you wish to stay for long, come only with your heart don't bring worldliness with you, and don't tell tales." This is a vital clue to the origins of the design of this house, for a similar inscription stand above the entrance to one of France's National Monuments - the Villa Argana built by architect Joseph-Albert Tournaire for the gifted author Edmond Rostand at the turn of the last century. Here it is - "You who come to enjoy our clear light and to sit drinking in our changing skies, don't come with anything but your heart, and don't tell tales." Hum. Cross the threshold and the similarity to Villa Armaga strengthens. The entrance leads to a round tower with spiral stair giving access to the four first floor bedrooms, the master ensuite. The ground floor flows through a suite of amazing rooms, each faithful to their own style, they run the gamut from state-of-the-art Italian kitchen though oak-panelled English dining-room to a stained-glass lit book-lined library warmed by a huge re-set medieval fireplace down three or four treads of elegant stair to a bright and airy petit salon whose (French) windows beckon you to the antiquities on the terrace beyond. Words fail. You must let me take you round this magic place, view the inspired detail and breathe its clear air... It really is quite a place.
