About me My wife and I could have featured on one of those TV programmes such as “No Going Back”. Both of us had stressful jobs in the UK and after taking a 6 month trip around the World we decided that we did not want to return to our old stressful lives. Hence in 2004 we sold up in the UK, bought an old vigneron house, complete with barns, and over the following year converted the barns into three luxurious gites and added a swimming pool – and so far there is no going back! Working for Leggett is an ideal job for me as I get to see other people’s houses as well as share my enthusiasm for the area. | | About my area The region is constantly quoted as one of the best places to buy in France as it benefits from 300+ days of sunshine, easy access to the Mediterranean beaches and also skiing in the Pyrenees is only 2 hours away. Whilst property prices have risen in recent years there are still many good priced properties around and if you do not mind some work then there are plenty of bargains. As winemaking is the major activity here, vineyards surround many of the villages, and with the backdrop of the Montagne Noire driving around the quiet roads is a pleasure. The Minervois wine region is fast becoming recognised as producing fine quality wines and many local vineyards are winning medals at worldwide competitions. The area abounds with history and to visit the fortified town of Carcassonne is to be transported back to the Middle Ages. You can experience the atmosphere of a medieval town, surrounded by ramparts, drawbridges and 52 towers. The Canal du Midi, made even more famous by Rick Steins’ “French Odyssey” runs through the centre of my area and many of my properties are within a short walk or cycle ride of this World Heritage site. The leisurely way of life soon works it’s magic and you soon realise that when the shops are closed between 12.00 and 2.00, you do as the locals do and have a relaxed lunch at one of the many, fantastic value, local restaurants. |
